Ian Armstrong

After first working on a salmon farm in 1977 during his school holidays, Ian has over 35 years of management experience in the farmed salmon industry including working in 9 different countries, most notably Scotland, Chile & Norway. Ian was a salmon farmer with Marine Harvest for 12 years followed by 8 years of running processing factories for Marine Harvest & Scottish Sea Farms. A proven capability for successfully delivering innovative solutions led to the formation of the independent consultancy Nevis Marine Ltd in 2002. This platform continues to facilitate the formation of joint venture companies capable of introducing new technology into the salmon farming industry for the further enhancement of fish welfare.

Ian graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1982 with a BSc (2.1 Hons) in Wildlife & Fisheries Management. Recent Industry achievements include the reintroduction of Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) as a viable treatment option for international salmon farmers in a joint venture with Aquatic AS, a Norwegian company. Previously, Ian was an Assessor for a major animal welfare society, helping them introduce their fish welfare scheme into the majority of the Scottish farmed salmon industry.  Another notable success was the introduction of the innovative Closed Valve “Live Chill” harvesting methodology into the 3 largest Scottish companies in cooperation with the innovative Norwegian wellboat company Sølvtrans AS.
